CRB checks 'do not replace vetting process'

A good recruitment practice is not just about ticking boxes and carrying out Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks, one industry expert reminds employers.

Simply carrying out a CRB check does not provide enough information, says Anne Fairweather, head of public policy at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation.

"Criminal record checks are not the be all and end all of good quality recruitment practice and sometimes people are just looking for a tick box approach which won't necessarily offer you the security you need," she explains.

A BBC Radio 4 Face The Facts investigation in August found that employers in England and Wales are making illegal criminal record checks on staff.

The Information Abuse report highlighted a recommendation from crime reduction charity Nacro for the CRB to monitor applications, as it believed unnecessary checks are undermining the law and too often leading to workers being suspended or sacked.

However the Home Office stated that the CRB cannot get involved in making employment decisions.ADNFCR-1169-ID-18808112-ADNFCR
