Wave farm application approved

Government ministers have approved an application by npower renewables to build a large wave farm at Siadar off the Isle of Lewis.

The development, which is the first of its kind to be given the green light in the UK and will be one of the largest wave stations in the world, is expected to create up to 70 jobs.

Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond said the wave farm represents a "significant step in Scotland's journey to become a world leader in renewables".

He said that once completed, it will generate enough electricity to power around 1,800 homes, helping Scotland and the UK to meet their renewable energy targets.

The wave farm will consist of 40 underwater turbines and, according to the BBC, will use technology known as oscillating water columns.

Meanwhile, the Guardian reports that Cardiff-based Tidal Energy Limited is testing a new generation of marine turbines which use ship propellers to generate electricity.
