NDA names potential nuclear sites
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has named four potential sites for the construction of new nuclear power plants in the UK.
Sellafield in Cumbria, Bradwell in Essex, Oldbury in Gloucestershire and Wylfa in Anglesey have all been put forward as suitable locations.
All four sites - which are home to existing nuclear power plants - will go forward to the government's Strategic Siting Assessment process.
The criteria that will be used to assess the suitability of the sites will be published tomorrow (January 27th) and a decision will be made later in the year.
During a visit to Sellafield, prime minister Gordon Brown said: "Nuclear is crucial to our low carbon future. It is crucial to our energy security and at the same time it represents a massive opportunity for the UK economy."
Earlier this month, energy companies E.ON and npower announced the creation of a joint venture to build new nuclear power stations in the UK.
