Expertise to RGU

Leading UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn has teamed up with The Robert Gordon University to provide expert advice to final year law and law management students.

The firm is playing a key role in the university's UK Oil and Gas Law module by giving a series of guest lectures and workshops. The focus of the next lecture, which will take place tomorrow (Tuesday, 28 November), will be about decommissioning.   

Leon Moller, an Aberdeen-based lawyer with Shepherd and Wedderburn, will outline the international and national legal decommissioning frameworks and will give practical examples of decommissioning. The topic is proving popular both within and outwith the law faculty, with many student from other courses choosing to attend.

Other lectures and workshops have focused on the contractual regulations in the North Sea oil and gas industry and have looked at relevant industry initiatives such as the Code of Practice, CRINE, LOGIC and FPAL, as well as how contracts came into use and the industry response from both an operator's and contractor's perspective.

Mr Moller said: "I am delighted that The Robert Gordon University has asked me to give this lecture. Although it is still early days for decommissioning, it is set to become a major consideration for the oil and gas industry during the next decade and beyond. It is essential that skilled employees entering the sector are aware of the legal implications of decommissioning and I hope to give the students an insight into these during the lecture.

"Decommissioning offers huge potential to Scotland's oil and gas industry. It is estimated that the total North Sea Continental Shelf spend for oil and gas decommissioning is likely to be over £15 billion, with about £6.3 billion to be spent over the next decade in the UK waters.”

Angela Adrian, lecturer at Aberdeen Business School, said: "Shepherd and Wedderburn has been intrinsic to the module. We were looking to find practitioners to help contribute to the oil and gas programme and they had the expertise to complement the programme. The students have been delighted with the lectures. We have tried to make the module fun by combining lectures with field trips."

The decommissioning lecture will take place at The Aberdeen Business School, Tuesday, 28 November 2006, 2.00 pm – 5.00 pm.
