Advisers in multi-million pound spin-out deal

Shepherd and Wedderburn advises University of Strathclyde in multi-million pound spin-out deal

Leading UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn has advised the University of Strathclyde on one of its biggest-ever deals involving a spin-out company.

The transaction saw specialist machine tool and measuring device maker Renishaw acquire a 75% stake in D3 Technologies Ltd for £1.85 million, together with a commitment to fund £5 million in specialist equipment and infrastructure over the next five years.

Corporate finance partner George Boyle led the Shepherd and Wedderburn team which also oversaw for the University, as a shareholder, D3's acquisition for £850,000 of University of Southampton spin-out company, Mesophotonics.

D3 was spun-out of the University of Strathclyde's chemistry department and specialises in Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) and the development of SERS for molecular diagnostics and trace detection tests for diseases.
