Easing the way to a more competitive Water Market

  • Advising Water Industry Commission on the introduction of Competition into non-domestic water market in Scotland
  • Appointed to the Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation (NIAUR) and advising Water UK
Leading UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn has advised the Water Industry Commission, the regulator of Scottish Water, on the introduction of a framework for competition in Scottish water and sewage markets.

The Water Industry Commission is responsible for introducing competition to non-household water supply, which should allow for wider choice, lower prices, better services and increased innovation for customers. Shepherd and Wedderburn has been instrumental in ensuring that all codes governing the behaviour of the market are securely in place before the market officially goes live and new competitors are allowed to join the market in April 2008.

The firm's utilities team has a vast amount of experience in the water industry. Currently advising Water UK, it has recently also been appointed to the legal panel of the Northern Ireland Authority for Utility regulation (NIAUR) that regulates water, gas and electricity markets.

Gordon Downie, a partner at the firm, commented that: ”It's an exciting time to be involved in the water industry. Our involvement with both the Water Industry Commission and Water UK underline our strength within the sector at a UK level. Our team has invaluable experience in this area and our recent appointment to the Northern Ireland Authority for Regulation will further strengthen our expertise in the utilities sector.”
