Protecting Your Eureka Moment
Necessity may be the mother of invention but protecting your Eureka moment is equally vital in the cut-throat commercial world.
And with new technology now key to a number of industries, including the North Sea’s lucrative energy sector, the need to safeguard brilliant new ideas, innovative techniques and products is essential – financially and legally.
On 21 November 2007 an Aberdeen seminar will reveal the pitfalls plus the tricks of the trade that can help businesses exploit and protect their intellectual property.
Headed by Richard Cockburn, an Aberdeen partner in leading UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn, the event will be attended by industry executives, in-house legal advisers, business managers, directors of research and development and academics.
Mr Cockburn said: “Technology is key to a raft of industries, not least oil and gas and biotechnology.
“In the energy sector, new technology leads to easier exploration and production, lower costs, greater resilience and higher rates of success both in locating and in recovering new and mature assets.
“But if you are the owner of that technology, how can you license it out in a way which protects your valuable technology and prevents anyone else from using or abusing it? Or if you are a licensee, what should you be looking out for to ensure that you have the full rights required to exploit that technology effectively?
“This seminar looks at effective transfers of technology, and uncovers some of the techniques which can be adopted to optimise transfer and use of that technology. It will flag up problem areas and how to avoid them.”
The event, Legal Aspects of Technology Transfer, is being held between 8.30 and 11.00 am on 21 November 2007 at Ardoe House Hotel just outside Aberdeen.
