Scotland benefits from Second Transatlantic deal in a week
The last week has seen the conclusion of Scotland's two most headline grabbing investment deals of the year, and teams from leading law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn were in the enviable position of representing Scotland in both cases.
The commercial team, headed by Glasgow-based partner Joanna Boag-Thomson, acted firstly for Scottish Enterprise and then for TMRI Limited, the company set up to act as a link between universities, drug companies and the NHS in a £50m funding package for groundbreaking medical research in Scotland. £17m of the investment package will be put forward by Scottish Enterprise to complement a further £33m that has been committed by Wyeth, the American pharmaceutical giant. Four Scottish universities in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow will benefit from the deal, and a research centre will also be set up at the University of Dundee.
The firm also played a central role in the deal which will see a further two championship-standard golf courses added to the north east of Scotland's already impressive roster. Shepherd and Wedderburn acted on behalf of the Menie Sporting Estate, which has just been acquired by legendary US entrepreneur Donald Trump's company, Trump International. The land is located at Balmedie on the northern outskirts of Aberdeen.
Shepherd and Wedderburn chief executive, Patrick Andrews, commented: "These two deals showcase Shepherd and Wedderburn's growing confidence and ability to negotiate, on Scotland's behalf, substantial investment deals with the world's most powerful companies.
"In particular, our growing Aberdeen office has been involved in a number of interesting deals recently and this latest one will help us to build on the reputation we have already established in the local market."
