Helping put North East Scotland on the sporting map

Leading UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn has been appointed to provide legal services to the £28 million Aberdeen Sports Village.

This facility is being constructed by a JV between the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen City Council and sportscotland and will provide northern Scotland with a sporting hub capable of hosting international sporting events, attracting promising athletes to the University. The firm will advise on property, construction, contract, competition, employment and health and safety law for the newly formed company.

David Beattie, director of sport at Aberdeen University stated: “The new facility will help train world-class North-east athletes as well as giving all students access to the kind of state-of-the-art sporting facilities that are long overdue.

"We are looking forward to working with Shepherd and Wedderburn on this project, which will be a huge benefit to those in the local community, regardless of their age or ability, who want to start leading a healthier lifestyle."

Caroline Cumming, head of the property team for the Aberdeen office commented: “This is great news for the firm. This appointment shows the strength of our property and cross-sector capabilities, and we are looking forward to working with our new client on this exciting project.”

The work will be carried out by the firm's growing Aberdeen office which has quadrupled in size since its inception in 2004. The office, which offers a range of legal services, were responsible for closing a number of significant construction and property deals in 2007 including:

  • Acting for the main contractor Miller Construction (UK) Limited in connection with the design and build of the new retail and leisure development at Guild Street in Aberdeen
  • Acting for SEPA in the demolition of its existing facilities and the creation of new laboratories and office space with car parking
  • Acting for Scottish Enterprise in the development of an Energy Development Centre comprising 27 individual high quality business units at Aberdeen Science and Energy Park
  • Acting for the Bank of Scotland in the funding of the construction of 36 houses with car parking and landscaping at Glen Farm, Dyce
