Shepherd and Wedderburn Gets Young People Ready for Work
Staff from UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn participated in a recent effort to get young people ready for work as part of the UK’s biggest employee volunteering event.
Give and Gain Day on 5th June saw thousands of employees from across the UK give time and skills to schools and community groups. Give and Gain Day in Scotland is organised by the Prince’s charity Scottish Business in the Community. SBC helps businesses have a positive impact on their community.
Over thirty employees from the firm gave their time and skills to school pupils across Scotland. A dozen staff from the Glasgow office of Shepherd and Wedderburn worked with pupils from Springburn Academy to get them ready for the world of work while the Edinburgh office welcomed members of the city's Canongate Youth Project.
The young people were given a behind the scenes tour of the firm and worked through practical exercises with staff to give insights into what employers are looking for.
Patrick Andrews, Chief Executive of Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP said, "We're very excited to be involved in the Give and Gain Day. We hope to be able to give these students a flavour of office life to help prepare them for the job market once they leave school. It's important to us to be able to make a meaningful contribution to our local community and also give our staff the opportunity to engage in activities which are beyond their everyday role."
Norma Allison, Teacher and Employability Officer at Springburn Academy said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to find out about employability. They need as much information as possible in today’s job market so this will help prepare them for the years ahead.”
Chief Executive of SBC Jane Wood said, “Give and Gain Day is about getting as many people out there to make a difference during work time. When times are hard, employee volunteering is the most cost-effective and valuable way for companies to continue to invest in their people’s time and skills – and to develop future talent and enterprise in the community.”
