New panel appointment lights up Shepherd and Wedderburn's regulatory division

Shepherd and Wedderburn has highlighted its strength in utilities regulation with the confirmation of a major panel appointment within the EU energy sector.

The regulatory team has been appointed to the panel of legal consultants to advise the Irish Commission for Energy Regulation ("CER") and the Northern Ireland Authority for Energy Regulation ("NIAER") on the 'All Island Project' which is looking at the design and implementation of a Single Electricity Market in Ireland.

The appointment follows a competitive tendering exercise and reflects the firm's significant expertise in the electricity market. Shepherd and Wedderburn's long term relationship with ScottishPower, along with experience gained through projects such as the Moyle Interconnector Project and the implementation of British Electricity Trading and Transmission Arrangements (BETTA) earlier this year, meant that the Shepherd and Wedderburn team was well placed to secure the contract.

Gordon Downie, a partner at Shepherd and Wedderburn, and one of the country's leading competition and regulatory lawyers, led the team along with leading utilities specialists James Saunders and Liz McRobb. Commenting on the appointment he said: "This contract is a major coup for the firm and reflects our status as one of the UK's leading specialists in utilities regulation. The project will run for a number of years and we will engage many of our market leading specialists.

"Shepherd and Wedderburn has enhanced its expertise in electricity regulation in recent years and we believe that we offer our clients the most comprehensive service available."

The project work will be carried out in Belfast and Dublin and will involve collaboration between legal, financial and technical experts drawn from a range of UK and Irish firms. The other members of the legal panel are leading law firms from Ireland, Northern Ireland and the United kingdom.
