First staff graduate from unique new marketing course
An innovative new marketing course run by Strathclyde University has awarded its first Certificate of Professional Development to graduates from a leading UK law firm.
The course, which was specifically geared towards the needs of staff from Shepherd and Wedderburn, has been such a success that the University is now looking to market the course to other professional service firms.
Gillian Hogg, Head of Strathclyde University’s Marketing Department was delighted to award Jayne Foster, Claire Litster, Margaret Cowan, Myra Marshall, Jennifer MacLeod, Fiona Gibson, Tamara Agnew, Joy Webster and Maria Dickson from the firm’s Glasgow and Edinburgh offices with a Certificate of Professional Development in ‘Developing business through managing customer relationships’.
The ground-breaking scheme was designed to provide staff with a level of practical marketing and business development knowledge and skills appropriate for their role. The 15-module course outline was created in conjunction with the firm's marketing team and throughout the duration of the course topics such as client management, marketing information, database management, seminar and event management, market research, communication skills and business improvement were studied.
Elaine Collinson, manager of Scottish Management Projects at Strathclyde University commented: "Marketing is a key area for the legal sector. Traditionally, this sector has relied on word of mouth or referral for its business. Increasingly, the more progressive law firms are more sophisticated in their approach to marketing and are adopting a very proactive approach to their market place. We are delighted with the success of our first graduates and look forward to seeing them find a practical outlet for their new knowledge and skills.
David Wallace, Marketing Director at Shepherd and Wedderburn, commented: “Shepherd and Wedderburn considers the development of its staff as a key factor in its continued success. The course was specifically designed to suit the firm's needs and help employees understand how marketing as a discipline and they as individuals influence the company as a whole.
Ultimately such development enhances the quality of service we offer to our clients. We are delighted to see the first graduates take so much from the course and hope that it is something we can repeat with another group of employees in the future.”« Back to Press Releases
